There are 13 replies, with the last one on 07/18/2008 at 12:29:18 PM by Juliana
Quote:
Good morning!

I would like to point out that the education responsibility applies to everyone. There are people that are open to accepting or seeking out guidance and suggestions, and there are those that aren't. This applies to the gentle who wins a Crown, or takes an office, or just looks like they need help with their encampment. You can't force someone to do something they do not want or are willing to do. You can give a person all the information in the world, but if they didn't read it, it doesn't matter that they even got it.

In a Crown situation, if the incoming winner comes in with the view "I know what I am doing, and this is the way it's going to be", it's not going to matter what anyone says. They have chosen their path and rarely will that position change. From there, it's do the best you can, and try make them look the best they can. As an officer or adviser, all you can do is say your peace, agree or disagree, and do your own job to the best of your own ability. That is the reality of what we do.

My advice to winners or even people who are interested and think they may never win:

When you win a Crown it's hit the ground running for everyone, and usually it's a sprint not a jog. The more information you can glean before you enter a list will help you should you ever win that list.

READ EVERYTHING that has to do with the Kingdom as a BUSINESS -- the copies of law, corpora, handbooks, customs, etc. See how the Crown interacts with each part of the kingdom hierarchy and our neighbors. It's public information, and it's out there. It's not a secret. What really is the job outside of leading armies and giving awards?

TALK to everyone you can. High, low, former Crowns, current B&B's, officers, heck, even the people you may not really care for. Trust me they have an opinion too. The more information you can gather, the more ready you will be. For any path you choose to take. And if you're not ready for the reins...you'll at least be informed if someone asks you about it.

Being the Crown is not an easy job. Being a Kingdom Officer is not an easy job either. In that vein, as always I stand ready to talk to anyone and all about the business end of the Kingdom. I am certain other officers will do so as well. If there is someone who wants "hands on" experience well, we can probably arrange that too. There are many open kingdom offices, and many have deputy positions open too. It's a great way to learn and meet people.

Juliana

There are 57 replies, with the last one on 07/16/2008 at 6:41:39 PM by padruig
Quote:
I have not been on the Militaris recently, and am trying to get caught up, as new duties require me to perhaps keep a more active presence here. This particular topic has been interesting to read. I am now a member of slightly over two years. Our first event was Michael and Sati's coronation. We have now attended 3 <gasp> Uprisings. We play for several reasons
1) Our entire family enjoys the SCA. I have 4 children, and my lady wife, who are very active with SCA. In fact, we are far past hobby status, perhaps approaching obsession [:D]. We have found that generally, there is something for everyone, and where there wasn't we could create it, and receive support from others in doing so. There are not too many activities we ALL can enjoy...
2) The SCA is full of good examples for my children to emulate, and occasional bad examples to avoid. I know religion can be touchy to some, but I and my family are strong LDS, and we love the concepts that can be taught our children through SCA activity that mirror what we try to teach through religion..., specifically, moral truths. Honor, Chivalry, courtesy, mutual respect are all things we try to teach, and the SCA provides another venue through which we can teach our children morals we believe are vital to their present and future success.
3) Good friends. We have met many noble and great people we otherwise would never encounter. Many of you have posted in this topic. Some I don't know as well as I would like. It is my great belief that we will be known by the company we keep, and in most cases, there is no better company available. Yes, we disagree on some things, our beliefs may differ, our politics may run counter to that of each other, but we all have great worth, and we try to improve each other.

I have not experienced much of the negative things mentioned here. I also am in 40's, just learning how to fight. Will I ever be a duke, or king, or even a knight. Very doubtful. But that's not why I play, so that is irrelevant. Can I enjoy my time, good friends, and learn new/old skills? Yes! Can my family do the same? Yes! Can I help others do the same? Yes! So, I am here, and here I shall remain. And as long as I can, through my loud and usually obnoxious personality, help relieve people of their mundane concerns, however briefly, I will do so. Because by so doing, I briefly escape from my own. And I believe that is also a reason we play this wonderful game, that has not really been mentioned. We can escape for a time the cares of our mundane lives, in a healthy and enjoyable fashion.

YIS
Padruig McTavish KYCM
Bard of Arrows' Flight

Lord Padruig McTavish
Bard of Arrows' Flight
