Bart,
I have been using the poo on a stick for several months now and I am in love. They are light and fast and STRONG! Fighting florentine has made me appreciate them even more. At Barons war I was pleased to discover that when taking fire from spears in a hangin block i was not beaten up nearly as badly by the cup banging off of my gigantic skull.
Some say that they are ugly but i personally think that they are like bulldogs... too cool to hate.

I agree with Roger the balder hilts are indestructible and fairly cheap. I have seen some aluminum hilts that are just about as light but I do believe the unibody design is what gives the strength to the hilt. However I would agree with Bart that the leather gauntlets are awesome and I am looking into making a pair of those for spear, glaive, and ax use ext...
All in all I think when it comes to the hands, protection is the main concern. If I see an amazing suit of armor and the only thing that looks off are the hands... I'm okay with that!

Back to the new armor part of this. I'm just finishing a Churborg (sp)#13, after a long time of not doing much on it. Hopefully, it'll be done by Crown. I'm also just finishing a butted mail hauberk to go under it. Hopefully, it'll get done before Crown as well.
Other projects include a new set of gauntlets and a set of greaves. Then doing period lining in 2 helms, new arms.
Plus I picked up a set of Windrose quillions and pommel at Estrella last year, and I've got a stick to put them on, so that's a project that's fairly high on the list as well. I'd like to make a scabbard for them. Have you seen the rattan sword scabbards that HG Konrad and Master Ulrich made? They're very cool and have inspired me to get one done as well.
Keep up the ambition everyone, let's see some neat new stuff out there! |

I saw several new bits of kit at Crown, good work folks. HL Raven's new red jupon was particularly striking (as was his sword).
Let's keep this up folks, it's how we'll improve our game bit by bit. |

Wanted to get this thread moving again, especially with Estrella zooming up on us.
I got a chain shirt completed a while back. I've got a "rough draft" set of sabatons about 75% completed.
Today I worked on a set of greeves that have been sitting around waiting for some work for the past 2-3 years!
Count Morgan punched a bunch of liner holes in my pig faced bascinet, so I'm hoping to get a period liner in that helm by Estrella.
I'm hoping to get working on the rough draft for a set of hourglass finger gauntlets. That will take some R&D, but hopefully I can get it knocked out.
Also just need to paint my canvas covered Bart wooden heater and it'll be good to go.
My problem right now is just focusing on one piece and completing it! I just found an article last night on how to modify a McClennen saddle into a medieval saddle. I'd like to get that knocked out by this summer as well! Oh, and I'm finishing up a sword scabbard for my Albion Norman sword. I feel sorry for those folks who don't have anything to do, and just sit around the house watching TV. None of that for me!
Update us on what you've been working on, please! |

I'll chime in here. I just built a very small, ABS plastic sternum plate that I can wear under my gambeson so that I can fight in my old hauberk, from time to time. Hopefully this summer, I'll have the money to upgrade my hauberk from painted aluminum, to flattened, riveted steel. I'm looking at the hauberks on the Historic Enterprise catalog. I'm working on a pair of gamboised vambraces for Duke Aaron in Atenveldt, and trying to finish a pair of banded steel, Byzantine style greaves for me before the war. The steel bands will match the pattern of my lamellar. And with the inspiration of Your Grace, Duke Alan, I also purchased a sword from Albion myself over the holidays. I picked up "The Reeve" type X model. I will also be making a period scabbard, and would love any advice you have. Any pitfalls I should be aware of?

Your Excellency Ralph,
Excellent to hear about your new Reeve! I'm looking forward to seeing it! I picked up some 4 inch by 48 inch by 1/4 inch poplar boards/wood strips at Lowes. Saves a lot of planing to get it down to the desired thickness in the sidewalls. Instead of chiseling out the blade shape, I used 3 pieces of popular to make a "sandwich" and cut the blade shape out of the middle one, then the blade outline from the whole thing. I'll detail it more to you in a separate e-mail. I did line the scabbard with wool material. I like that it keeps the blade from rattling on the wooden parts.
Next I'll be finishing the final wood core shaping then cover it with leather. I got a good idea from the Armour Archive on a chape, and already had in mind the belt hanging system.
I've heard very good things about the Historic Enterprises mail hauberk. They have larger sizes now as well. At some point, I'll be picking up one of those myself. I've got one coming from Master Knut right now (hopefully in time for Estrella). But for ultimate authenticity, the HE mail is superior.

For my midwinter rebuild, I added these shoes:
http://www.armlann.com/eh.htm
And started wearing my hardened leather greaves.
I guess working on the leather gauntlets gave me an itch to do more hardened leather, so I finished up the leather knees and elbows, rebuilt my cuisses, and added some removable lamellar straps and leather shoulder cups. I'm going to give it all a test drive tomorrow night at the CdC fighter practice.

Updates on my stuff. Got the greaves done, finally! Finished drilling holes in my bascinet and have the 2nd draft of the period liner done. If work will slow down a bit, I'll cut it out and stuff it and see how it goes.
Next on the agenda will be finishing the wooden shield, then the gauntlets!
Oh, another big one got added to the list. Looking at Duke Armaund's conversion of a McClellen saddle to a "medieval" saddle. Hopefully that will get completed by this summer.
Estrella is closing in fast, how are you folks coming on your "stuff"? |

I finished my cuirass, demi-gauntlets, cuisses and gorget. Tried them out last week. I think I may pad the cuisses a bit better. I was limping for a couple of days...
The old stuff was okay, so I donated it to the Barony. Justin (a newer fighter) will be wearing it at Estrella. So, if you see someone in my old coat-of-plates don't assume it's me with a sword and decide to take your vengence out on an old combat archer!

I got a set of spaulders and knee and elbow cops for Xmas! I'm working on finishing them with leather. I made all of my patterns and laid out the pieces. Now I need to cut, dye, rivet, and strap everything. I'm having a blast!!! I also plan on making a variation of a wisby coat of plates. And I hope to have all of it ready for Arrows' Flight Mystery event in March! WOOT!

I've decided that I'm going to use the opportunity of needing a norman helmet for the Conroi for my first helmet build.
I plan to use a pre-built top from Ironmonger (12 ga. mild), with 14ga. mild cheekplates and backplate (may do the back as slats, haven't decided yet). The cheeks and back will be welded to the top. I will construct the grill separately using mild steel, and attach it after it is finished. Then I plan to oil-blacken the entire thing. Finally, I will add a brass nasal and probably some brass accents. Quite likely etched or cast, as i can also do both of those processes. I haven't decided yet whether I will add a chain aventail or not. We'll see as we get closer to completion. I'll put up pictures as the project progresses. |

Well, it's been a long winter, and with Coronation and Crown coming up, I'm curious what folks have been working on.
At Estrella, I picked up a creasing stake and saddle stake. Started messing with the creasing stake on a set of spaulders. First go around was satisfactory, as far as the creasing goes. I'm hoping with practice to make some additions to my kit. Creases were very common in legs, and other portions of 14th and 15th century armor.
Just tonight I got the sword belt basically completed on my new Albion Norman sword scabbard. I'm planning on having it at Coronation. Turned out pretty good for an amateur... Now to start work on a chape.
So what's in the works for you? |

Well, I'm working on making some hardened leather greaves , stamped and colored for an early 14C look...Just wish the swelling in my left calf would go down so I don't make a mistake.
Also working on some Al gauntlets and trying to find time to dish out and assemble some that Ely has cut out already for the shire....O and a new kettle helm for my Hospitaller persona...

A reminder to all that Uprising is only 2 months away. There will be a Pas d'Arms on Thursday for those who wish to participate, and 2 months to get your armour up to "pretty" levels.
Also there will be "LOTS" of melee fighting, so make sure your straps, and armour are up to the days fun, as well as your weapons up to speed.
For me, I'll be re-doing my greaves, and hanging a new aventail on my pigface bascinet.

Well, my greaves are still not done...Have to finish hardening them, giving them some color and strapping them, but not necessarily in that order...Am cutting out some new splinted va and rere braces, and making a new helm with either a chain aventail or leather...Depends on how fast I can weave the chain and how well it will comeout....O and making a new surcoat...My current one has seen better days, and is full of little holes and one big one...

Hey gang, I'm coming down for Uprising, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in an afternoon workshop on the things I do from producing gear to making tools and stakes. Let me know and I'll see what I can throw together.

Hi Thorwulf,
I think it's safe to say that there would be LOTS of interest in armoring topics like you're talking about. Let me know what you'd need to help support the class on this end.
Thanks! Alan |

Got my new leg harness polished up and strapped (steel is cooler), and the new helm liner (linnen and wool, No more smurf skin ) already see the benefits after one practice. |

Workshop idea,
No worries, I'll put some stuff together and think of what I may need down your end. I suppose space would be the thing, any chance of setting up near to where we did the bloomery last year?

Thorwulf,
Yes, we could set up over in Bloomery country. That will have some shade and would work fine. Figure on a time, and we'll get it set up. Saturday will be pretty full with melee fighting, so maybe Friday?
Aaron, glad to hear your new legs are up and running. The period liners definately are nice! Did you put in in your close helm, or in another?

Since this thread has almost died out, I figured I'd see if anyone is interested in re-booting it.
After a year's wait, I finally got a hauberk from Master Knuut of Weldedchainmail.com. May need a little trimming on the hem, but otherwise good to go. Now to get points on my gambeson.
I also finally got my quillion sword and rondel dagger put togther. Sewed leather on the handles and they look pretty nice. Got some of the material to make sheaths for them.
So, what other projects are folks working on to improve their harness and weapons?
