I just got a air powered planisher. It rocks.
I never knew I could make metal soo smooth.
Do any of you folks have an ideas about this device?
Is there anything I should watch out for?
I'm making guantlets now, but more projects will pour forth from my shop soon.

Don't get your fingers in it, that's the best piece of advice I got about them.
I understand that this advice also applies equally to english wheels.

Forkbeard,

Besides what Marcello said about keeping your fingers out of it...

Make sure the upper and lower "arms" are aligned so the thing doesn't beat itself to destruction. Also make sure your dies are smooth. I had to do a little sanding/polishing on one set of my dies. Initially (luckily on practice pieces), the die left many, many, many little pin head type marks. I cleaned up the dies and that all went away.

Mine is REALLY nice for planishing, and gives a nice smooth surface really fast compared to a hammer (and the resulting sore elbow!).

They are noisey, so be cautious about when and where you use them so the neighbors don't yell at you...

Alan

Thanks. The guantlet project is going incredibly well.
This planisher is the best thing I've aquired so far for armor work.
Now I need more stainless steel.
